Green midges on roses - how to deal with pests

Green midges on roses are a real disaster for a blooming garden. Their danger is not exaggerated; in the absence of chemical treatment, plants can die within a few weeks.

Green midges on roses - what are these pests

With the April warming, not only flowers appear in the garden, but small green insects on the rose. They crawl around the infield in search of food, finding rose bushes. The vigorous activity of pests leads to the weakening of plants: the foliage begins to turn yellow, curl, the buds deform and massively crumble.

Aphids on roses - attack for flower growers

What are these insects

Aphids are small insects belonging to the order of beetles. The maximum size of an adult does not exceed 3 mm. When attacking rose bushes, the number of parasites reaches several thousand units.

What does aphid look like

For your information! Aphids are distinguished by rare fertility. From one female, 1-2 thousand insects appear, which feed on the sap of the affected flower. After maturation and development of wings, young pests fly from one plant to another, located at a distance of up to several hundred meters.

Why are they dangerous for rose bushes

The danger of aphids lies in the way they feed, the insect sucks the juices from the flowers. Affected plants stop growing, most of them die. Pests become a source of development of secondary infections, the representatives of which include the black black fungus. The problem is associated with the release of the waste products of aphids, a sweetish sticky liquid that attracts other microorganisms.

Note! Sometimes, along with green parasites, white midges appear on the rose. They are competitors of aphids for plant sap, since whiteflies have a similar feeding method.

Causes of the appearance of aphids

There are no definite factors by which aphids appear in the garden. It is believed that the problem is associated with changes in temperature, the love of flowers for coolness and humidity. Under unsuitable weather conditions, the immune defense of plants weakens, rose bushes become easy prey for pests.

Important! Particular attention should be paid to the condition of roses during the dry heat. For timely detection of a threat, it is necessary to regularly inspect the buds and foliage of plants.

The main reasons for the attack of aphids include the appearance of red and black ants in the garden. Both species are concerned with protecting insect pests and transferring them from one bush to another. Ants' love for aphids is based on the last sweetish liquid secreted.

How to prevent the appearance of midges: prevention

What to do to prevent green midges from appearing on roses? To prevent pest attacks, follow these guidelines:

  • when buying new bushes, they are carefully examined, because pests can be on the lower part of the foliage;
  • on the garden plot, next to decorative flowers, you need to plant umbrella crops: dill, carrots, parsley, fennel;
  • pots with wood chips are placed over the entire area of the personal plot. The content will attract earwigs that feed on aphids;
  • Several birdhouses and feeders can be installed in the garden. Birds quickly deal with unwanted crawling and buzzing guests;
  • flowers must be fed in strict accordance with the instructions. Green beetles like to attack bushes weakened by improper care;
  • for roses, they must create optimal conditions for lighting, watering, feeding;
  • if several pests are found, they must be removed mechanically. Otherwise, after a few days, the entire garden will be covered with a stirring green mass.

Experienced gardeners believe that the appearance of aphids is almost impossible without ants. To prevent the resettlement of colonies of black and red insects, you need to do the following:

  • evenly spread pieces of double-sided tape or paper covered with non-drying glue around the rose bushes;
  • place poisoned baits with borax or boric acid mixed with honey or minced meat nearby;
  • treat ant paths with infusions of wormwood, elderberry or unrefined sunflower oil;
  • spread fresh and dry peppermint near the bush;
  • shed earth with eucalyptus, mint or tea essential oil;
  • Sprinkle the roots of the bush with cinnamon or lavender powder.

Note! Removing ants from the garden provides 70% protection against aphids. It is important to remember that for the former, the sweet liquid secreted by the pest is attractive, which makes the insects not only protect the parasite, but also transfer it from one tree to another.

The vitality of aphids leads to the need for constant change of chemical and folk remedies. Compositions and solutions need to be changed regularly, otherwise the parasite adapts very quickly to them. It is necessary to lure birds, ladybirds into the garden, constantly fight against the visits of red and black ants. Only prevention, proper care and timely cleaning will help save the garden from being eaten by the ubiquitous pests.
