Cyclamen - a dormant period of a flower at home

Cyclamen is a flowering plant that belongs to the type of perennials. Particular attention is paid to the flower in one of the most important periods of cultivation - the hibernation of tubers.

Why does cyclamen go into hibernation

The flower must go through this stage in order to gain strength. If you do not let him rest, he will very quickly lose its decorative properties.

When does the rest period begin

It is difficult to answer the question when the cyclamen retires. Unlike most plants, in which this stage begins in the last decade of November and lasts all winter, it hibernates in the spring, around mid-May. This period lasts until July. It usually comes after a lush flowering.

But in some cases, hibernation occurs in the summer. This can happen in July and last until autumn. In order not to miss the moment when the cyclamen goes into hibernation, you need to monitor its appearance.

How to help a flower go into hibernation

Many growers do not know how to send a cyclamen to hibernation. In order for the resting stage to pass as successfully as possible, the flower must be helped to prepare for it. In preparation for hibernation, the plant first stops forming buds, but the leaves are still green. You shouldn't cut them off. You will have to wait until the deciduous part is completely dry before it can be trimmed.

The yellowing of the foliage of a home flower should take place naturally in order for the tubers to have time to be saturated with all the necessary nutrients. Completely dried leaves should be carefully torn off and discarded.

Attention! While the deciduous mass gradually turns yellow, the substrate should be moist.

Consequences of artificial introduction into the resting phase

There is an opinion that if the flowering is abundant and the culture is in no hurry to go into hibernation, then it is necessary to transfer it to a dormant period artificially. But this is not true. The answer to the question of what to do if the cyclamen does not enter the rest period on its own is to wait for it to happen naturally.

Storing and caring for a dormant plant

The cyclamen flower, the dormant period of which should pass as successfully as possible for the plant, can be stored in the house in two ways.

In a pot

Leaving the flower to rest in the pot, it should be borne in mind that:

  • The best place to store tubers is in a dark place where the sun's rays cannot penetrate.
  • One of the conditions is that the pot must be placed on its side.
  • Storage temperature - +12.

Note! Even during the dormant period, the plant must be watered every 14 days.

Storing tubers

In a refrigerator

Another way to store tubers is in the refrigerator. Adequate storage conditions must be created. To do this, the planting material is removed from the pot, washed in water and transferred to a tight bag. Then the tubers need to be put into the refrigerator. During storage, the planting material should be regularly sprayed with water.

When and how to "wake up" the plant

Another exciting question for flower growers is how to wake up a cyclamen after hibernation. You don't need to do anything for this. As soon as the tubers began to give green sprouts, then the plant woke up.

Flower care after a dormant period

The answer to the question of how to keep the cyclamen blooming in summer will be this: after waking up, you need to start caring for the plant. After the sprouts appear, in order to keep them alive, you need to put the pot under diffused light and increase the watering. After this stage of growing a flower has passed completely, it can be transplanted. Fertilizer should be applied after a few weeks. It is best to choose universal ones, which contain all the necessary minerals.

The dormant period for cyclamen is very important. If this stage of cultivation is carried out incorrectly, the culture may cease to bloom profusely or even die.
