When dahlias bloom - care during this period

Dahlia (Dahlia) is a flower popular all over the world. Every season, well-known nurseries present to buyers the latest forms and colors of the perennial, which is native to the mountainous regions of Mexico.

When dahlias bloom: flowering period

All known varieties and varieties of dahlias are conventionally divided into:

  • early. The first buds bloom 30-40 days after planting in open ground;
  • late. Flowering begins only 70-80 days after planting.

Collar Pooh Variety

Most of the known varieties bloom in mid-July. Usually, the buds continue to bloom sequentially until the onset of stable frosts.

For your information! If you save the tubers in winter and ensure early forcing, you can get results at the end of May, when dahlias show flowering for the first time.

Planting dates for all varieties depend only on the region:

  • South of Russia - end of April;
  • The middle band - after May 15;
  • northern regions - the first half of June.

The exact timing of flowering depends on the specific dahlia species.

Collar

Their petals are very different, but in the core of the corolla they are short, rolled into tubes, and at the edges are flat and long. On average, the flowering period is from July to October.

Acicular

Their thin petals are twisted into flat tubes, sometimes cut at the ends like needles. They often look disheveled or shaggy. The length is different, so they even distinguish a subspecies - semi-needle dahlias, in which the edge petals resemble cones. This dahlia blooms from August to October.

Needle variety Space

Spherical

Their lush, rounded corollas look more like bright balls. Most of the representatives are tall, only a few are considered to be low. Petals are fleshy, dense, rather large, rolled into tubes with wide-open ends. The flower itself looks soft and loose. Flowering lasts from August to October.

Globular variety Neskio

Pompom

They are considered the closest relatives of the globular. Their spectacular fluffy flowers, dense to the touch, are collected from twisted petals, but their size is significantly inferior to large-flowered relatives. The plant is very sensitive to cold.

Note! When the temperature drops below 3 ° C, the leaves begin to turn black, which means it's time to dig up the tubers for winter storage.

These dahlias have a flowering period from July to September.

Pompom variety New Baby

Nymphaean (lotus)

This special species has a flat flower with a fluffy and slightly convex center in the center, assembled from short tubular petals. There are wide and flat petals along the edge of the corolla. It is worth waiting for dahlias of this species to bloom in July, and the end of forcing the buds in October.

Nymphaean variety Berliner Kleine

Anemone

They are quite often confused with the collared varieties, but there are some differences. So, in the center of the flower, the petals are twisted into short and graceful tubes, and the perimeter is formed by flat and wide petals. The key difference is in size (2-3 times larger) and splendor. The first month when this species of dahlia blooms is July, and the last month is September.

Anemonic Boogie Woogie

Peony

Corollas are collected from numerous rows of wide oval petals. Only in the core is a small group of short tubular flowers. Outwardly, you can only distinguish from peonies by foliage.This species will bloom in July, and will wither only in October.

Peony variety Horhofen

Cactus

Closest to needle-like. Flowers are found in all shades, with the exception of blue and black. The diameter of the corolla can reach 30 cm. The petal is usually twisted by 2-3 turns into a thin tube with a sharp tip. This species will bloom in July, and will wither no earlier than September.

Cactus variety Trebbiano

How dahlias bloom

An inflorescence is formed from the bud - a basket with a bowl-shaped wrapper, consisting of 3-4 rows of green leaves, fused at the base of the leaves. Flowers on the edge of the ligulate type, the largest and most brightly colored. Their shape can be very different: from flat to tubular. In the center of the basket, short tubular flowers, usually colored yellow or brownish-red.

After flowering, a fruit is formed - an achene. Inside there are many very small seeds that remain viable for at least 3 years.

Important! If it is not possible to dig up for the winter and save the tubers, then the plant is grown as an annual, and in other cases - a perennial.

Features of care during flowering

To get the most powerful strong stems and large buds, it is necessary to carry out a special procedure - pinching. Ideally, the plant should have only 2-3 stems, and all the rest, growing from the axils of the leaves, must be plucked out immediately, not allowing nutrients to be spent on their growth. Throughout the season, you will have to inspect all landings from time to time and pinch them.

Why dahlias do not bloom well

To make the buds appear again and again, the perennial needs to be fed on time. Usually fertilizers are applied in 3 stages at equal intervals: immediately after planting, in early summer and mid-July. A larger amount is not required, since it is possible to provoke an increase in green mass to the detriment of flowering. The first time, humus or mullein is applied, and the next 2 times - a complex mineral fertilizer for flowering.

Important! Hilling is recommended at the end of August. A small earthen mound is poured around the root collar. This simple measure will protect the tubers from too early changes in day and night temperatures, the first frost.

What needs to be done to make flowers bloom faster

You can speed up the moment of blooming of the first buds by forcing. 1 month before the intended planting in open ground, tubers should be removed from a cool storage. Work should start in April. Root crops are sprinkled with coconut substrate or sawdust mixed with peat and sand. Water a little. Can be placed on a windowsill or in a greenhouse.

With the appearance of sprouts, the tubers are planted in individual pots. Until planting in open ground, they are watered from time to time, keeping the substrate slightly moist. The maximum period of distillation is 4 weeks, after which the plants will begin to stretch. If the variety is prone to tillering, there is no purpose to get a tall cut, then pinch the stems over 4-5 leaves.

It is impossible to refrain from admiration when dahlias begin to bloom together. Their lush beauty is a riot of colors. Which variety to choose for the next season - this is the question, flower growers ask themselves, enthusiastically considering the catalogs of nurseries.
