The English variety was created in D. Austin's nursery. Roses of pale pink color look sophisticated, graceful on any terrain. Landscape designers create beautiful compositions with these flowers.

Rose Olivia rose - what kind of variety, history of creation

The variety was officially registered in 2005. Immediately became popular.

Olivia rose variety blooms with delicate pink flowers

Austin dedicated this rose to his daughter and named it after her. In his opinion, this is the best that has been obtained in the nursery for many previous years.

Short description

A compact ornamental plant up to 90 cm high. The width is about 78 cm. The shape of the bush is round. Medium brushes. Each has 3 to 5 buds. One flower (9 cm in diameter) consists of 40 double petals.

When the bud opens, there is a smooth transition in the color of the flower. The pink tint in the center changes to a pale one at the edges of the petals. When the flower blooms completely, golden stamens will appear in the center.

Advantages and disadvantages of the variety

The rose has many advantages. Among the main ones, the following should be highlighted:

  • Resistantly transfers the effect of precipitation, retaining decorative properties. Precipitation is dangerous for flowers that are in the stage of full disclosure.
  • Strong immunity. Rose has a strong resistance to pathogenic microorganisms. Protective properties against powdery mildew and spotting are especially strong.

The variety requires mandatory, correct preparation for the winter period. This can be conditionally called a disadvantage. Although for beginner growers, this is a real problem.

Use in landscape design

Olivia rose Austin rose is actively used by professionals in the field of landscape design. It will be appropriate for any garden area. Several applications for decorating the area:

  • the basis of the flower garden;
  • decorating the mixborder;
  • creation of hedges;
  • single and group landings.

Rose Olivia rose will decorate any, even the smallest garden.

Growing a flower in the open field

It is recommended to plant rose seedlings after April 15th or in autumn from September to mid-October. Rosa Olivia Rose Austin prefers open areas that are well lit by the sun. The area must be ventilated. The absence of groundwater nearby is an important condition when choosing a place of constant growth. When landing, avoid lowlands and dark places.

The soil should be saturated with nutrients with a high concentration of humus. At the same time, the soil must pass air and moisture well so that there is no stagnation during watering. Ph 5.5 to 6.5. That is, the soil should be neutral or slightly acidic.

Important! It is not recommended to plant roses where Rosaceae and other varieties of roses used to grow. If, nevertheless, this place is chosen, it is imperative to replace the top layer with a thickness of 50 cm.

You can improve the quality of heavy soil by introducing peat, compost (of plant origin), river sand into it. If the rose is planted in a lowland (which is undesirable), grooves are made around the plant for drainage or artificially created hills.To create favorable conditions for the development of roses, needles, peat, superphosphate are added to the alkaline soil. When the acidity level exceeds the permissible level, a little lime and ash are added to the soil.

Planting procedure step by step

Seedlings are usually purchased with an open root system. Before planting, they need to be kept from 60 minutes to 24 hours in water with the addition of a growth stimulator. This will help the plant to take root in a new place faster.

Before planting, you should carefully inspect the seedling for damage, cracks, and dry branches. Everything that is not alive is cut off so that these parts do not take food from the plant. The root system is "updated" in the same way. Living tissue is white.

Seedlings are placed in pre-prepared holes. They take root within 2-3 weeks. To bloom early, before planting in the fall, cut the shoots 15 cm from the root neck.

Attention! If it is cloudy or raining outside, you should postpone the landing. To do this, the rose is placed in a container filled with moistened sand. Put in a cool place.

Plant care

Rose Olivia rose requires proper, timely care: watering, top dressing, pruning, shelter for the winter.

Shelter for Olivia Rose for the winter

Watering rules and humidity

When the plant is in the growing stage, the soil is moistened regularly. When there is rainfall, watered every 7 days. During periods of drought, water is often watered - 2 times a week. One bush requires a bucket of clean, settled water. After watering, a loosening procedure is carried out in order to maintain the "airiness" of the soil. This prevents such a dangerous phenomenon as stagnation of moisture in the ground, which is detrimental to the flower.

To preserve the nutritional value of the soil, seasonal fertilizing is done. In the spring, fertilize with nitrogen to gain green mass. In summer, phosphorus and potassium are added for lush flowering.

Pruning and replanting

Pruning is an important procedure for this variety. There are several varieties: sanitary, shaping, anti-aging. The main (sanitary) pruning is done after removing the shelter for the winter. The kidneys shouldn't wake up yet. The cut is made exactly at an angle of 45 degrees. All that is obsolete, dried up is cut off.

The shrub itself is neat, so formative pruning is rarely needed. It is important to respond in a timely manner to thickening and remove branches growing inward and shading the light. When the rose reaches the age of 3-4 years, it is required to carry out a rejuvenating procedure, cutting off the branches that are covered with wood to the very neck of the root. This will stimulate the growth of shoots on the sides.

Sanitary shrub pruning

Correctly carried out pruning procedure ensures the preservation of the decorative effect of the plant and long flowering. Pruning is carried out only with a special tool - a pruner. It needs to be sharpened sharply and disinfected.

Features of wintering a flower

Rosa Olivia rose tolerates low temperatures down to -23 degrees. In warm or temperate climates, she does not need shelter for wintering. Preparation for wintering in cold regions consists in high hilling (from 25 to 30 cm) with a mixture of sand and soil and covering with spruce branches.

Attention! Before the shelter, the leaves are trimmed so that spores that lead to fungal diseases do not hibernate on them. The trimmed parts are burned.

Blooming rose

The flowering of Olivia rose is accompanied by a gentle, fruity aroma. In diameter, the flowers reach 9 cm. Maybe less, about 6 cm. It differs from other varieties of Austin in strictly vertical peduncles.

When the sun is active, flowering lasts 5 days. In the southern areas, it is recommended to create a slight shadow. For example, from trees, so that there are no burns to the petals. When the flower fades in the sun, the color of all its parts becomes uniform, comparing with the white, which is painted on the edge.

Under favorable climatic conditions, there can be from 2 to 3 flowering periods.During flowering, the necessary watering and potash fertilization are continued. It is imperative to do weeding to remove excess grass. It is necessary to monitor the flowers and cut off those that have withered. The plant should be inspected for dry, damaged branches. All "non-living" parts are cut off.

What to do if it does not bloom

Lack of flowering can mean the following:

  • wrong place;
  • insufficient nutrient soil;
  • over-watering or lack of watering;
  • damage by pests;
  • decreased immunity, illness.

Attentive and timely care is the key to a beautiful flowering.

Flower propagation

Reproduction is carried out by seeds, cuttings and dividing the bush. Reproduction using cuttings is the simplest. It is worth choosing the right stems. They should be strong and flowers should already bloom on them. The selection criterion is strong, unbreakable tongs.

Cutting occurs in stages:

  1. Suitable shoots are selected.
  2. Sections are made with pruners. Before the procedure, it is necessary to disinfect the instrument. The length of the cutting for rooting should be between 12 and 15 cm. It should have a pair of buds and three full leaves.
  3. If it's summer outside, disembarkation is carried out immediately into the open ground in a pre-prepared planting pit. It is filled with nutrient soil.
  4. Cuttings are placed at an angle of 45 degrees. Cover with jars from above to create a "greenhouse" effect.
  5. Water regularly.

For autumn cuttings, planting material is placed in pots or special planting boxes. Further, everything is similar to landing in open ground, which in this case will be in the spring.

Diseases, pests and ways to control them

The variety has excellent immunity. It can only get sick due to improper wintering. Of the pests, caterpillars and aphids are dangerous. When there are few insects, they are harvested by hand. With a larger amount, spraying is carried out with a solution of water and laundry soap or wood ash. When there is a strong pest infestation, they resort to the use of fungicides.

English Olivia Rose can act as a park plant. Looks great in combination with other varieties of its family and other crops. Can be grown in flower beds and separately, create hedges. This variety is irreplaceable in the design of any landscape.
