Rose Abraham Derby (Abraham Darby) - description of varietal flower

The Abraham Derby rose variety attracts the attention of amateur and professional gardeners. Some call him the most unpretentious that they have met, others, on the contrary, consider him very capricious. The truth is that the plant requires certain care requirements.

Rose Abraham Derby (Abraham Darby): description and characteristics

The English rose Abraham Derby was introduced to the general public in 1965. This park variety was bred by the famous British breeder D. Austin, crossing the climbing double red-pink rose Aloha and the polyanthus yellow rose Yellow Cushion.

Large flowers of this variety look very impressive.

The bush quickly grows up to 1.5 m in height, acquiring a rounded shape. The color of the buds is pale pink at the center and apricot at the edges, it can change shades depending on external conditions.

Note! Blooming double flowers have a classic shape and reach 4 cm in diameter. The aroma is pronounced with lemon-fruity notes.

Among the positive qualities of the plant are noted:

  • luxurious appearance;
  • unusual colors;
  • long flowering period;
  • pleasant aroma.

Having decided to grow a rose of this variety, it is important to familiarize yourself with its shortcomings:

  • medium resistance to various diseases and pests;
  • average winter hardiness;
  • intolerance to prolonged heat and waterlogging.

Landscaping professionals use the rose as a climbing rose to decorate gazebos and galleries.

Note!Correctly forming the crown, perennials can be grown with a scrub.

How to properly plant in open ground and grow a flower

Rose Abraham Darby will grow into a real beauty if you adhere to a number of rules when planting it. The basic sequence is quite common for all types of roses, but it has its own subtleties.

Important! Only strong seedlings should be used for planting. It is recommended to purchase them on a proven garden site or resort to cuttings from an adult healthy plant.

Planting is best done in the spring. Over the summer, the seedling will have time to get used to a new place, build up the root system and winters well.

Seat selection

The site must be selected carefully. It must meet the following requirements:

  • good diffused lighting;
  • protection from gusts of wind and drafts;
  • sublime location.

A bush planted in a suitable place will bloom profusely

If there are no hills on the site, then it is recommended to raise the soil level by filling them yourself.

How to prepare the soil and flower for planting

Before planting, the soil should be dug well beforehand twice - in six months and in 4-6 weeks. Liming is not necessary, but a little organic matter is recommended.

When preparing a seedling, you need to cut off the stems to 4-6 buds, remove damaged and dry roots, sprinkle the cuts with charcoal. After that, the plant is kept in water for 3-4 hours.

Step-by-step planting procedure

After the preparation is completed, you can start planting the rose. The sequence will be as follows:

  1. In the selected area, a hole is dug 2 bayonet depths of a shovel.
  2. At the bottom of the hole, drainage is poured, covering it with a layer of nutritious soil on top.
  3. The seedling is placed in a hole, deepening the root collar 5–6 cm below ground level and carefully spreading the roots.
  4. The hole is covered with earth and pressed from above with your hands.
  5. The seedling is watered abundantly.

Note! It is advisable to mulch the space around the bush.

Plant care

In warm climatic zones, Derby grows almost independently. In most regions of Russia, the rose requires constant care.

Watering rules and humidity

Although the variety is poorly tolerated by excessive moisture, it cannot be left without watering. In the absence of rain, the bush is watered once a week and after 2-3 days the soil around it is slightly loosened.

Top dressing and soil quality

In the first year, the rose is not fed, but in the spring of the second year of life, it is imperative to apply nitrogen-containing fertilizer. Throughout the season, special mineral complexes for roses are brought under the bush.

A lushly blooming rose cannot do without dressing

Pruning and replanting

The trimming procedure can be carried out in several ways. The choice of method depends on what kind of plant the gardener wants to get:

  • growing a climbing bush, only non-viable shoots are removed from it;
  • a large scrub is formed, slightly shortening all the branches in the spring;
  • to give compact sizes in spring, the shoots are shortened by 2/3 of their length.

Important! It is not worth replanting a rose of this variety, unless there are serious problems in the development of the plant.

Features of wintering a flower

Before the onset of cold weather, the rose is huddled, mixing sand to the soil. When the temperature drops to 0 ° C, a frame covered with non-woven material is installed above the bush.

Important! Derby rose should not be sprinkled with straw or peat for the winter, otherwise the plant will soper.

Blooming rose

This variety blooms almost continuously. The bush at this time is covered with many large apricot-peach single flowers.

A period of activity and rest

The flowering of this rose is long-lasting. Begins to open buds in early June. Flowering continues until the end of September.

For your information! Throughout the summer, when new flowers are blooming, the plant should be fed. To preserve the decorative effect of the shrub during flowering, wilted buds should be removed.

What to do if it does not bloom

One of the main reasons Derby doesn't bloom is due to the state of the environment. The variety refuses to form buds in extreme heat or during rains. If the conditions of care were violated, then by correcting them, you can help the bush to gain color.

Flower propagation

Derby can be propagated by semi-lignified cuttings. Another available method is the germination of cuttings.

Cuttings are harvested in summer or fall, when the Derby rose has finished blooming. Healthy shoots 10–12 cm long are cut from the bush, removing the lower leaves. The lower cut of the cutting is treated with a growth stimulator, after which the workpiece is placed in moist, loose soil and covered with a film. The seedlings are regularly ventilated and sprayed.

Layers are laid in the ground in the spring, and separated from the mother bush only in the next season. To form layering, a sufficiently long young shoot is bent to the soil, placed in a hole about 10 cm deep and pinned, sprinkled with earth.

Diseases, pests and ways to control them

Of the diseases in this rose, powdery mildew, rust and black spot can most often be found.

Attention! If they are found, all infected shoots should be removed and the bush should be sprayed with an appropriate preparation.

Of insects, one should beware of rose-colored aphids, spider mites, leaf rollers, sawflies and thrips. They fight them with insecticides (commander, aktara, spark), using strictly according to the instructions.

A healthy bush looks very attractive

Knowing the peculiarities of growing a rose of the Abraham Derby variety, you can grow it on your site.With proper care, its overgrown bush will become a real decoration of the garden.
