Planting roses in the fall in open ground

Planting rose bushes is one of the most important jobs in an autumn garden. If everything is done correctly, next spring the rose will delight you with abundant and lush flowering. Below is described how roses are planted in the fall in open ground, because this plant dominates the rest.

Planting roses in the fall in open ground

Autumn planting of rose bushes is carried out in late September or early October. It all depends on the region. The best option is to plant cuttings 20-30 days before the onset of real frosts. At the same time, the night air temperature should not fall below 5 ° С, and the daytime should not rise above 15 ° С.

Benefits of autumn planting

Flowers can be planted in spring, but it is planting roses in autumn that allows the plant to:

  • take root faster and it is easier to endure temperature drops, due to which many bushes planted in spring die;
  • bloom before the rest;
  • do not feel discomfort from the lack of constant care, as well as wattle, hiding the bush from the sun in spring or constant watering (autumn plantings tolerate heat better than spring ones).

For your information! Autumn bushes are stronger, by the spring they are overgrown with roots and can direct forces to the aboveground part. More leaves and buds appear on such roses.

How to plant roses in the fall with an open root system: step by step instructions

The type of planting largely depends on what kind of root system the seedling has. In the fall, it is better to plant open-rooted roses.

Seedling selection and preparation

It is better to purchase seedlings after a preliminary study of all the characteristics of the variety that the buyer is interested in. This can be done due to the fact that many professionally engaged in rose breeding nurseries have their own information bases. A young plant, regardless of variety, must meet the following criteria:

  • have well-developed roots of a natural brown tint, without dots and rot-like spots;
  • 3-4 beautiful smooth shoots should come from the root without growths and cracks.

The cost of a seedling depends on the choice of the root system. Roses with a closed root system are sold in pots, the probability of planting them in a new place is almost 100%, so they are more expensive. But this does not mean that the container does not need to be inspected.

Important! The buyer has the right to ask to free the bush from the pot in order to check the quality of the seedling.

Planting procedure and deepening

It is interesting that if the rose did not previously grow in a pot, but was planted there before selling it, then it will not be difficult to pull it out, however, most of the earth will remain in the container. There must be several strong thorns on the stems of a young plant. The color of a healthy stem is green or light green.

Before boarding:

  • inspect the seedling again, removing weak and broken branches during transportation with a pruner;
  • tear off the leaves if they are still left;
  • cut off part of the roots, leaving no more than 40 cm in length (the sections of already shortened roots are updated, removing a maximum of 1-2 cm);
  • dried and sluggish roots are placed in water for a day.

Note! For a guaranteed increase in plant survival, the roots are placed in a mixture based on clay, mullein and water.

Place for planting roses on the site

Rose seedlings are planted in open areas well-lit by the sun's rays. For abundant flowering, they need at least 3 hours a day to be in direct sunlight or in partial shade. The latter option is most suitable for planting roses with a delicate color of buds. In the light, such buds will look faded and inconspicuous.

Mulching the soil under the bush

Important! The more light a rose receives in a day, the more resistant it becomes to various diseases. But the flower does not tolerate the midday heat, it cannot be planted where exactly at noon there will be the most sunlight. Having done this, you will have to shade with trees or a small fence.

Plants prefer hills protected from wind and drafts. If groundwater rises to the surface, the bushes are protected from them by placing them in a pit under the roots of the drainage.

The optimal distance between bushes

Most rose bushes are planted at a distance of half a meter from each other. But a lot depends on the variety:

  • between plantings of hybrid tea and polyanthus roses, no more than 30-60 cm is left;
  • trench-planted curb rose bushes should be at a distance of 25-30 cm from each other;
  • semi-vine and park varieties are planted keeping 1-1.5 m between plantings;
  • climbing varieties do well when placed 1 m away from other plants.

Note! A close planting increases the risk of developing and transmitting fungal diseases, viruses, and simplifies the work of pests.

What soil is needed and how to fertilize it

The soil needs fertile and loose, even clayey, capable of passing oxygen and moisture, is suitable. To soften heavy soil, add:

  • peat;
  • sod land;
  • compost;
  • clay.

The earth should be neutral acidic. To bring it to the desired level, sulfur, ferrous sulfate and sour peat are used. Reduce acidity with dolomite flour, wood ash or lime.

Important! The rose cannot be grown on poorly fertilized soil. Prepare the soil 2-3 weeks before planting. It is advisable to add compost or humus to the hole.

Well preparation

The depth of the planting hole should be about 45-60 cm. If the earth is clay, then dig a deeper hole. Its optimal width is about 60 cm. The roots should not bend, if this happens, a larger hole is also needed.

It is impossible to plant immediately, the soil must settle, having absorbed nutrients from peat, sand and humus, poured onto the bottom of the pit with a layer of 20-25 cm.

Correct landing is when the vaccination site is hidden by the ground.

Landing

The process of planting roses in open ground does not take much time. It is necessary:

  1. Form a mound from the peat mixture placed at the bottom of the pit.
  2. Lower the bush on it with its roots down.
  3. Spread the roots evenly over the hole.
  4. Fill the hole with soil, tamp it.
  5. Water the seedling with water (5-10 liters of water is enough).
  6. Add soil under the bush if it has settled after watering and the place of the scion is exposed.
  7. Mulch the soil.

Important! During planting, make sure that the vaccination site is covered with earth. It should be 3-5 cm below the soil level, and for some types of roses at a depth of 9-10 cm.

Standard roses are also planted at an angle of 30 °. If this is not done, the stem may break when sheltered for the winter.

What to do if the florist is late with planting roses

If the roses were not planted on time, there was no time, or winter came earlier than usual, then it is better to postpone the work until spring. Before that, all roses are planted in a greenhouse. If there is no greenhouse, then on the site you can dig a hole 40-50 cm deep, place a bush there, and sprinkle it with peat on top, covering it with spruce branches and old clothes so that the plants do not freeze until spring.

If a warm basement is available, then the bushes are placed there, distributed over boxes filled with clay and sand.

Note! Untimely planting will cause the death of a plant that did not have time to take root. Better to give it up and postpone gardening until spring.

Conditions for further care of a young bush

A mound of earth 15-20 cm high is poured under the newly planted bush.If the planting occurred early, and the autumn is dry, then the roses are watered. In the spring you need a bush:

  • feed;
  • trim;
  • to treat diseases and pests.

Further care is carried out in accordance with the season, for example, in the summer, wilted flowers are cut off and bushes are spud. This is the only way to grow a beautiful plant.

How to build a shelter for wintering

Young roses need shelter for the winter. Around the seedling you can build:

  • frame canopy made of burlap or agrotextile stretched over posts;
  • a hut made of pine or spruce paws.

Sprinkle small bushes with dry leaves, cover with old clothes. The flower shop sells special covers for covering plants. Their use is convenient because during the spring thaw, such a structure can be easily removed and installed back.

Planting a rose in the fall is much more convenient and correct than in the spring before frost. The plant will have time to take root, during the winter it will receive the required degree of hardening and acquire resistance to diseases and pests. If the gardener does not yet know how to plant a rose in open ground in the fall, it is worth giving it a try after reading the step-by-step instructions above.
