Why Potentilla does not bloom - how to feed

Cinquefoil is a very beautiful plant. There are many varieties of it, some varieties bloom with yellow flowers, some with white or pink flowers, but it is mainly for the sake of flowering that they are planted in the garden. At the same time, the plant is very unpretentious, does not require special care, and if there are no flowers, then the gardener should think about why Potentilla does not bloom, what mistakes were made and how to fix it.

Incorrect fit

Very often the reason for the lack of flowers is a lack of light. But the wrong landing can be just as troublesome. The root collar of the plant is very vulnerable to pests and pathogens. And sometimes the reason why the cinquefoil does not bloom well is that the root collar is below the ground level. Hence - and all fungal and other plant diseases, so you will have to tinker with the release of this part.

Blooming Potentilla

Sometimes cinquefoil does not bloom well because there is too little space left between the bushes, and as a result, the plants simply interfere with each other. Therefore, when planning their planting, you need to mark the site so that the distance between the bushes is at least 40 cm, or even more.

The plant is planted in spring or autumn. The landing pits are dug taking into account the fact that the root system of Potentilla does not lie deeply, but is located almost at the surface.

The reason the plant was unable to bloom may be because the planting hole was not well drained and as a result there is stagnant water at this level. It is necessary from the very beginning to lay a layer of rubble or broken brick on the bottom of the pit, cover it with a layer of earth and humus on top, and only after that plant the plant.

Important! It is recommended to add a small amount of ash and mineral fertilizers to the soil mixture. Then, in the absence of other violations, the lush flowering of Potentilla is almost guaranteed.

Planting the plant ends with abundant watering, and the soil around the bush is then mulched. In the future, you need to ensure that the soil around the plant does not dry out. If the correct watering cannot be established, then beautiful yellow flowers on the cinquefoil may not appear.

Watering errors

The main reasons for the lack of flowers in this case:

  • insufficient watering, in which the soil dries out quickly,
  • too active watering, due to which the root system hurts,
  • lack of drainage, due to which stagnant processes occur - water is always at the roots.

The last problem is solved by regular loosening - as for all other flower beds in the country. As for the irrigation regime, then here you already need to look at the situation.

Lack of light

Most often, the answer to the question why the cinquefoil does not bloom is precisely the lack of lighting. This perennial loves light areas more, and those on which light falls throughout the day.

Cinquefoil loves abundant lighting

An overabundance of direct ultraviolet rays also affects the condition of the plant in a bad way. In such cases, its flowers quickly fade in the sun, their delicate petals dry up and they fall off.

In order for the cinquefoil to please with its pink or yellow flowering, you need to find a site for it with diffused light. But you need to remember that in too thick shade the plant will not fully develop, on the contrary, it will be susceptible to frequent diseases.

Fertilization and feeding

Experienced gardeners know that while loams are ideal for this perennial, it will thrive on almost any soil. The only exceptions are varieties with pink flowers, they prefer fertile soils. In all other cases, if the plant does not bloom, then it is not the soil that is to blame, but improper fertilization.

You need to know from the very beginning how to feed Potentilla, even when planting this plant. For this, it is customary to use mineral complexes.

The next application of fertilizers of this type is carried out as early as next year. Moreover, this is done in early spring. For this, potassium sulfate and phosphate are mixed in equal proportions (30-40 g of each ingredient will be enough for 10 liters of water - this fertilizer is enough for a whole bush).

Many are interested in how to feed Potentilla in June. Here, the most popular options are folk remedies like an ash solution, used no more than twice a month (300 g per 5 liters of water) and a mullein solution - it can be used three times a month. Also, until the fall, you can use liquid humic fertilizer once every two weeks.

Important! During the budding period, it is recommended to use factory-made phosphorus-potassium fertilizers. They are used according to the manufacturer's instructions.

But even with proper feeding, Potentilla will not bloom if you do not carry out seasonal pruning. This is done in spring and autumn, and in the process all dry and damaged shoots are cut off.

Diseases

Very often, the reason why the cinquefoil does not bloom well is that the plant is sick. The most common problems in this case are rust and mottling, as well as the presence of powdery mildew. In principle, all these pathologies are classified as fungal diseases. Therefore, for their treatment and prevention, timely treatment of Potentilla with fungicides is necessary.

It can be bordeaux liquid, which is often used to spray shrubs and even fruit trees. It is used in spring, maximum at the beginning of flowering. A little later, you can carry out the treatment with colloidal sulfur. But it is better to carry it out before flowering, since such procedures are considered more effective. Fungicides such as Fitoverm and Decis are also used.

Rust requires additional measures. With this disease, mainly the foliage of the plant suffers. It becomes covered with unpleasant-looking spots. In a mild form, these are really just red spots, but when the form is neglected, the leaves curl and dry out.

Interesting! Most often, rust appears when Potentilla is planted next to conifers, so such a neighborhood should be avoided.

What to do if the disease already exists - you just need to treat the plant with preparations based on boron and sulfur, as well as a solution of potassium permanganate.

Pests

Cinquefoil is a pest-resistant plant. Her only enemy is the scoop. This is how moth-like butterflies are called. Moreover, they inflict the greatest damage at a time when they are caterpillars and devour leaves.

The hole left by insects and the larvae deposited on the lower surface of the leaf makes it possible to understand the reason why yellow flowers have not yet appeared on the cinquefoil. You can fight these pests only with the use of insecticides. Of these, Fufanon is considered the most effective.

How to feed and restore a plant

In order to restore the bush, you need to know how to fertilize Potentilla in the summer, how to care for it during the most important period for flowering. A common mistake gardeners make is the use of nitrogen fertilizers. But they only stimulate the growth of green mass, and the laying of buds slows down. You need to feed the plant with fertilizers based on magnesium, potassium and phosphorus.

Proper care will ensure vibrant blooms

In order for the plant to regain strength next year and please with abundant flowering, you need to cover it for the winter, since Potentilla does not tolerate cold too well.

Compliance with the basic rules for caring for cinquefoil allows you to achieve its lush and long flowering. This is not so difficult to do - you just need to provide enough light, water and minerals.
