Peony Collis Memory (Paeonia Callie's Memory)

Peony Collis Memory is one of the best representatives of ITO-peonies. Despite the short duration of flowering, it surpasses other representatives of the species with decorative characteristics.

Peony ITO Collis Memory (Paeonia Itoh Callie’s Memory) - what is this variety

ITO-peony is a hybrid. It was bred in the USA in 1999. The first such flower, which marked the beginning of a whole kaleidoscope of varieties, was bred in 1948 in Japan.

The flower instantly falls in love with its lush buds, in which different shades are intertwined

For your information! The prefix ITO is given in honor of the creator of the beautiful plant T. Ito.

Brief description and characteristics

Kellis Memory Peony has the following description:

  • height up to 90 cm;
  • flower diameter 20 cm;
  • Terry petals, open center, cream color with yellow tints, center painted in a copper shade of red;

Peony ITO hybrid Collis Memori is a rather unpretentious flower, does not require the creation of specific conditions.

Advantages and disadvantages

The plant has a lot of advantages, this is the beauty and unusual flowering, which, like for peonies, lasts for a relatively long time, from 3 to 5 weeks. Florists love it for its unpretentiousness and good endurance.

Few disadvantages include the fact that flowering stops at low or too high temperatures.

Use in landscape design

Peony Kellis, as it is also called in Russia, in flower beds, in the garden and on plots can be planted both solo and in groups. The flower looks great on a lush green lawn and in combination with conifers.

With this flower, you can create stunning compositions and magnificent bouquets.

Growing a flower: how to plant it in open ground

To successfully grow ITOH peony, you need to find the right place, provide nutritious soil and the necessary care.

Planting by root cuttings

This method of planting involves the use of a piece of rhizome with a small root and the presence of a growth bud. Favorable time for work is from July to August.

Seat selection

Peony loves sunny, warm places, but prolonged exposure to direct rays should be avoided. The flower will feel comfortable in light partial shade, thanks to which the blossoming peonies will last longer.

Attention!You can not plant a peony in lowlands, where water accumulates, and in the shade.

How to prepare the soil and flower for planting

Preparing cuttings:

  1. Remove the rhizome from the ground, clean it of dirt, straighten tangled roots.
  2. Divide the rhizome into several parts 1 to 3 cm long.
  3. Disinfect by lowering the roots for 4 hours in a weak solution of potassium permanganate (no more than 4 g per bucket of water).
  4. After the cuttings dry, roll them in charcoal, leave overnight to form a crust.

Peony loves soil moderately dry, enriched with nutrients.

The flower in fertile soil takes root well and quickly

The landing procedure is stepped

When the cuttings are ready and covered with a charcoal crust, you can start planting:

  1. Make holes 15 to 20 cm apart.
  2. Loosen the earth, add sand to the holes, remove weeds.
  3. Dip the cuttings into the holes, sprinkle with earth, tamp a little.
  4. Drizzle.

It is recommended to sprinkle the cuttings with a fertile mixture (in equal parts mixed sand, manure and garden soil). Cover for the winter.

Important! Boarding is done in the morning or evening.

Young shoots will appear within 1-2 years, after which they can be transplanted.

Seed planting

The seed method is only used for breeding, because the varietal characteristics of the hybrid paeonia are not preserved.

Plant care

Peony Callie s Memory is quite easy to care for.

Watering and feeding

Watering is required regularly, up to 2 times a week, in hot weather with an interval of 1-2 days. The soil must be kept slightly moist.

Attention! The hybrid flower does not tolerate drought and summer heat.

As a top dressing, it is better to use natural products (bone or dolomite flour) or mineral fertilizers with phosphorus in the composition. No fertilization is required for the first 2 years after planting. In the future, they need to be applied in early spring and August.

It is recommended to use natural fertilizers, for example, dolomite flour

Mulching and loosening

You need to loosen the soil after each watering and heavy rains. Mulching is recommended in summer to keep moisture in the soil longer. For this it is worth using rotted horse manure.

Important! Mulching with straw or leaves is not recommended, from this the flower can get sick with a fungus.

Preventive treatment

For the prevention of parasites, special means are used. Trichodermine is used to protect the plant from gray mold.

Peony Blossom Kellis Memory

Peony blooms with proper care within 5 weeks.

A period of activity and rest

The active period begins in June - July, lasts until mid-July - August, the rest of the time the flower is at rest.

Care during and after flowering

When buds appear, nitrogenous fertilizers are applied. In August, when the resting phase begins, fertilizing with phosphorus-potassium preparations is performed.

Note!The first 2 years of Callis' inflorescences have an irregular shape. Immediately after the buds appear, they need to be cut off in order to get beautiful, lush flowers in the 3rd year.

What to do if it does not bloom

The lack of flowering may be due to the following factors:

  • mineral-poor soil;
  • drought;
  • direct sunlight on the flower.

Establishing proper peony care will help restore the flowering process.

Peonies after flowering

With the onset of dormancy, the peony needs pruning, if necessary, a transplant. In the fall, the flower must be prepared for winter.

Transfer

It is extremely undesirable to transplant peonies, because the flowers do not tolerate this procedure very badly. If, nevertheless, there is a need for this, the plant is carefully taken out, a clod of old earth is preserved on the roots, and moves to a new hole, well fertilized.

Pruning

For a flower over 3 years old, formative pruning is carried out from the second week of June, it consists in removing dried inflorescences. In the fall, the bushes are cut to ground level, after which the plant is sprinkled with soil. This measure will contribute to the active appearance of numerous kidneys.

Without pruning, the flower will cease to bloom luxuriantly and will begin to "litter" itself

Note! There is no need to cover an adult plant, because peonies are distinguished by good resistance to frost. Young flowers can be covered with spruce branches.

Diseases, pests and ways to control them

ITO flowers have good resistance to diseases and pests. Rarely, due to improper care, gray rot, powdery mildew may occur. Treatment consists in trimming the damaged parts and treating the flower with insecticides.

Peony ITO is a beautiful garden flower with, albeit not long, but magnificent flowering of delicate creamy petals. Caring for him is not difficult, so that the peony pleases with its colors, it must be properly watered, fertilized and preventively pruned.
