Orchid baby on a peduncle: examples of how to grow and root

Phalaenopsis is a beautiful plant that pleases with its bright flowering for a long time. The number of copies in the house can be increased if a baby has appeared on the stem. With proper care, it will be possible to plant it, preserving all its varietal qualities.

Orchid cakes

Phalaenopsis babies are small processes that can appear on the peduncle, stem, or at the bottom of the roots. To promote their appearance, it is very important to monitor the orchid, observe temperature and humidity. If you do not do this, you can not only not wait for the baby, but also destroy the plant.

For your information! On the stem of the orchid there are small buds, from which new shoots appear, which can be transplanted over time. But not all types of orchids can release babies, or as they are also called cakes. They can grow on Phalaenopsis or Dendrobium. After the end of flowering, a dormant bud wakes up on the stem, from which leaves begin to grow.

An orchid baby on a peduncle in appearance resembles a small process with 2 or 3 leaves. The root begins to grow much later or may not grow at all. The speed of the baby's plant depends on the correct care of the orchid. With the right approach, the roots can appear after 3 months, and otherwise after six months.

How to raise a baby on a peduncle

Not all orchids can independently release the baby, sometimes it is necessary to stimulate them. Therefore, many lovers of this plant are trying to figure out how to grow an orchid baby from a peduncle, from a cutting, or on the lower part of a flower.

Important! To breed an orchid at home, you need to choose a flower with a good stem so that the plant is not sick or weakened.

A baby on a peduncle takes roots for a very long time

Peduncle baby

It is necessary to grow a baby from a peduncle only after the plant has faded. After that, the peduncle is shortened so that a few centimeters remain above the kidney. On the kidney itself there is a scale, which must be carefully removed and lubricated with cytokinin paste. It is this paste, penetrating the kidney, that gives the initial stimulus for the growth of a new baby. It is also recommended, after lubricating the kidney, to wrap it in a plastic bag before pecking the cake. During this period, the flower needs a lot of light and heat.

Shank baby

How does an orchid give babies from a cuttings? After flowering, the trunk is cut off at the base and divided into small pieces so that each of the parts has a bud in the middle. It is necessary to remove the scales from the kidney and also apply cytokinin paste. After that, the cuttings should be left on the table for weathering for an hour.

Next, you need a glass of water and an activated carbon tablet. The tablet must be crushed and added to water, stir well until completely dissolved. Place the cut cuttings in the prepared water. You can also plant the cutting in a pot of sphagnum moss and build a small greenhouse to maintain the required temperature and humidity and the growth of the cake.

Growing cakes on a cutting is an easier way to propagate

Baby on a stump of a cut plant

In this case, you need to take a good flowering orchid, which has many dense leaves.After the plant has completely bloomed, it is necessary to separate the top 4 leaves with several roots. The cut off part must be planted in a separate pot and looked after as a regular phalaenopsis. In order for a baby to take root and start growing, she needs high air humidity and a temperature of at least 25 ° C.

If all the recommendations are followed, the baby on the phalaenopsis peduncle will grow even at home, thus increasing their number in the house.

How to grow a root system

Sometimes it happens that an orchid has a baby, well, what can you do to grow roots? In this case, the opinion of flower growers was divided: some argue that you need to be patient and just wait, while others suggest ways that will help speed up the formation of roots.

Stimulation of root formation with sphagnum moss

Using sphagnum moss is the easiest way to grow a root in a baby. To achieve this, you must:

  1. Soak the moss for half an hour (it should swell well).
  2. Form small lumps and tie to the base of the cake.
  3. To enhance the effect, the moss is covered with a film, but periodically it is removed to air the young shoots.
  4. Spraying of the plant is carried out regularly.
  5. A root growth stimulator is used.

Note! With this method, the roots can appear after two weeks. After they grow to the required length, the cake is placed in another pot.

If this method does not work, you can try another method.

Stimulates the growth of the root system

Root germination with foam

To do this, you need to make a little effort and build a structure out of foam plastic in which you can place a container with water. In this case, you do not need to cut the baby, you need to attach the prepared structure to the mother flower so that the base of the cake is in the water.

All the time you need to ensure that the process does not rot and weathered.

Important! Once or twice a week, it is worth adding a rooting stimulant to the water so that the baby's root system develops much faster.

Sprouting cakes in greenhouse conditions

In this case, it is necessary to cut off the baby with a part of the peduncle and plant it in a separate transparent pot.

Important! Keiki must be at least 4 months old.

Pour the substrate into the container, cover with sphagnum moss on top and place the pot under a plastic bottle, thus creating the effect of a bath. It is very important to spray the plant with water once a day, but at the same time you need to make sure that water does not fall into the center of the leaf outlet.

With this method, the plant can be rooted in 4-6 months. To speed up the process, you can additionally use stimulants and fertilizers.

Phalaenopsis baby care

Caring for children of different types of orchids, including Cattleya, requires a lot of patience and strength, because with the wrong approach to growing, you may not achieve a positive result.

After the baby has released the roots of the required length, you can start planting it in the ground. To do this, you need to take the narrowest possible pot so that the orchid is cramped there. Be sure to fill a quarter of the pot with small pebbles, then add fine pine bark.

Note! In this case, pebbles play the role of drainage, which is very important when caring for an orchid.

Caring for an orchid requires maximum patience and attention.

After that, the orchid is carefully placed in the bark, and on top, you can add an extract from a mixture of moss, peat and charcoal.

Important! If, when planting the children, all the roots do not fit into the pot, then a little can be left on the surface.

After that, the plant must be looked after as an adult, adhering to the following rules:

  • there must be high humidity in the room;
  • in the daytime, the temperature should be no more than 30 ° С, and in the evening not lower than 18 ° С;
  • if it is not possible to maintain the required temperature, then the plant must be covered from above with a plastic or glass cap to create greenhouse conditions;
  • sometimes remove the ventilation hood for 3 hours;
  • you need to water the plant when evaporation has disappeared on the walls of the pot;
  • once it is poured with plain water, and the second time it is worth adding a small amount of fertilizer and growth stimulant to the water;
  • after the leaves on the cake have begun to actively grow, the growth stimulator should be canceled.

The baby should be in a small pot for up to 10 months, after which it should be planted in a larger pot. If everything is done correctly and optimal growth conditions are created, then in 2-3 years you can get a full-fledged adult phalaenopsis.

You can get a whole greenhouse from one flower, the main thing is to be patient and make a lot of effort to maintain the necessary temperature conditions.
