How to make an orchid bloom at home
Content:
The stores sell phalaenopsis at the time of their violent flowering. Bright blooms attract buyers and increase sales. But often, after purchasing a bush, flower growers cannot wait for the appearance of new flowers for a long time. However, there are some tricks on how to make an orchid bloom.
What affects flowering
Like all flowering plants, Phalaenopsis will only open buds if certain conditions are created for this. You need to know what kind of watering, soil and temperature the orchid loves, how to care at home so that it blooms.
A place
No flowers like a change of place, and even more delicate orchids. The pot must be placed on a windowsill with diffused light; direct sunlight should not be allowed to hit the leaves and roots. If the flowerpot is on the south side, the window needs to be slightly shaded.
Good light for the plant can be obtained on the eastern side, where the leaves and roots will receive the most gentle rays of the sun. After the flower has been placed in a constant corner, they try not to move or twirl it.
In winter, natural light may not be enough; you need to provide the phalaenopsis with additional lighting with fluorescent lamps. Flowers especially do not like darkness, in gloomy rooms the inflorescences will begin to fall off. Drafts also adversely affect the culture.
Fertilizers
Since phalaenopsis does not have a dormant period and can bloom at any time of the year, it can be fertilized in winter as well. Special formulations for orchids are sold in stores. Top dressing is applied every one and a half to two months.
Feeding the plant with phosphorus fertilizers is the first thing to do for the orchid to bloom. At the same time, nitrogen preparations are excluded, since they stimulate the growth of leaves.
Watering
Phalaenopsis belongs to tropical crops and needs moist air. Water the top of the tree with a spray bottle daily, sometimes give it a warm shower in the bathroom.
Water quality also affects bloom. Experienced flower growers know how to water orchids so that they always bloom. Hard water negatively affects the roots, they need to be moistened with settled or thawed.
The crop prefers root watering. Warm liquid is poured into a saucer and a pot with a plant is placed in it. After a few hours, when the roots are wet, the water is drained. Make sure that the substrate and the underground part are completely dry, only then you can water the flower. Overfilling leads to decay, in this case, an emergency transplant is performed with drying the roots.
Temperature
A thermophilic plant thrives best at a temperature of 25 ° C. It is important to maintain a constant level of heat in the apartment in order to stimulate the flowering of the culture. Daily temperature drops should be no more than 7 ° C.
Why the orchid doesn't bloom
There are reasons why it is not possible to achieve flowering culture for a long time.
- The pot is often moved, the change of decor does not like the flower. After purchasing phalaenopsis, you should choose the optimal place for growth and flowering.
- Natural light is not enough for the growing season of the plant. You can understand that a flower has little light if you look closely at its leaves. If the green part of the orchid turns yellow and becomes lethargic, phytolamps should be connected.
- Excessive moisture has a detrimental effect on the condition of the roots and foliage of the bush. It is necessary to reduce the number of waterings. An important rule is that it is better to water less than to overflow the flower.
- The container in which the flower is planted is opaque. The roots of the culture must be exposed to sunlight for it to vegetate successfully. You need to plant orchids in transparent plastic or glass pots.
- The bush is too young. The orchid begins to bloom after it has formed from five strong healthy leaves. Before flowering, all the strength of the plant is spent on building up green mass and roots.
If the fulfillment of all the rules of care does not help, you have to force the phalaenopsis to bloom using stressful methods.
How to achieve flowering
When the rules for caring for the plant do not help, you do not need to despair, but think about what to do to make the orchid bloom. The culture needs stress to awaken the blooming of the buds. Changes in heat and lack of moisture can be applied.
Temperature drop
The method is used only on mature and healthy bushes. Young seedlings and those that are in rehabilitation after decay or disease may not withstand the temperature shock.
In spring or early autumn, the pots are taken out to the balcony or terrace at night. The temperature outside must be at least 16 ° C. For a day, the bushes are taken to the house, this continues for 2 weeks. During this period, the orchid will accumulate enough carbon dioxide to feed the roots and develop the buds. After such stimulation, flowers should appear on the peduncles.
It must be remembered that flowers can be woken up in this way only if they were looked after correctly during the year: the conditions for watering, lighting and feeding were observed.
Drought
An orchid can stand for quite a long time with bare peduncles, in which flower buds are already in a dormant state. You can wake them up if you limit watering.
The first step is to ensure that the roots of the plant and the substrate in the pot dry out. Phalaenopsis is planted in a transparent container through which you can see the dry bark and roots. Then the intervals between watering the flowerpot are increased. If the flower is usually watered after 5 days, now it needs to be done every 10 days. It is impossible to spray from a spray bottle and fertilize the plant. After a month or two, flowers are likely to appear on the stems.
This method can be used all year round, and even with insufficient light, the flowers will give results. It is not recommended to dry the bushes if the air temperature is above 30 ° C.
Leaving during flowering
After the first buds have appeared on the peduncles, watering is doubled. The plant must receive enough moisture for the flowers to open. The top is sprayed to ensure a sufficient moisture level. Feeding is also increased to support phalaenopsis during times of heightened nutrient requirements.
The nighttime temperature should not be lower than the daytime temperature by more than 7 °.To maintain a thermal regime, the pots are placed near batteries or heating devices.
Some orchids produce several flower stalks covered with flower caps. Under this weight, the stems can bend and break. To prevent this from happening, the branches are propped up with special supports, which are sold in flower shops. You can support the peduncle by tying a stick to it, which is carefully inserted into the substrate.
After the flowers fall, you need to feed the bush with mineral fertilizers. Do not immediately stimulate the plant to bloom again. Peduncles are not cut off, buds remain on them, from which buds will bloom later.
The main decoration of an unpretentious tropical plant is a bright, long flowering. So that the pots do not stand with empty peduncles, and often delight with lush inflorescences for a long time, you need to know how to make an orchid bloom at home. Blooming phalaenopsis will decorate any interior of the apartment, and the collection of multi-colored flowerpots will make guests envy.
