Flowers like lilies, only small

Lily is a common garden plant that has many "imitators". If you like the shape of the flower, then you can pair it with a lot of companions of all sizes and colors, for every taste. You just need to know what these mini lilies are called.

Flowers like lilies, only small

A flower of a similar shape, but significantly smaller than that of a royal lily, has a lot of garden crops. Here are just a few of them.

Erythronium (kandyk)

A herbaceous bulbous plant from the lily family (lat.Liliaceae) - kandyk, a dog's tooth or erythronium (lat.Erythronium) refers to ephemeroids, that is, most of its life processes occur underground.

Showy lilies in the garden

The plant blooms closer to May. 2 leaves appear from the bulb and a peduncle between them. At its end there is a red, yellow or white drooping type flower with 6 petals and numerous large stamens.

Important! The plant is included in the Red Book.

European kandyk

Goose bow

The goose or bird onion (lat. Gagea) is a representative of the Liliaceae family, widespread in Eurasia and North Africa. Plant height ranges from 30-35 cm, depending on the variety.

Umbellate inflorescences are formed by a few flowers. Each corolla has 6 yellow petals, which makes the flower look like a bright pointed star. Pointed xiphoid green leaves make up a picturesque frame. Soon after the flower wilts, the ground part dies off.

Ixiolyrion

The name of this perennial bulbous plant (lat. Ixiolirion) translates as "Ixia-like lily". Long narrow pointed leaves (up to 30 cm high) grow from small rosettes (up to 4 cm in diameter) in spring. A peduncle up to 50 cm in height can appear in early summer or in September.

Blue or purple flowers, similar to small lilies, have a delicate pleasant scent. The bell of 6 petals bent outward reaches 8 cm in diameter. In a racemose inflorescence there are 3-10 buds. Flowering usually lasts 2-3 weeks.

Mountain Ixiolirion

Hesperokallis

The only representative of the genus hesperokallis wavy-leaved (lat.Hesperocallis undulata) looks closest to the garden king lily with its flowers. It occurs naturally in the semi-desert regions of North and South America. The silvery-green leaves are not like - they resemble aloe or agave, fleshy and with a wrinkled wavy edge.

Flowers bloom only after extremely rare rains in their natural habitat. Each flower on a high peduncle bears 6 white petals with a silvery or greenish tint. The corolla opens in the evening, and you can immediately hear it by the strong pleasant aroma.

Desert lily

Flowers like lilies on a thick stem

In garden lilies, the flower stalks are not too thick, but strong. In other plants, they are very thick and juicy.

Cardiocrinum or giant lily

Translated, the name cardiocrinum (lat. Cardiocrínum) means - heart-shaped lily. It is hard to believe that a plant up to 4 m in height dies off almost immediately after flowering. Peduncles are noteworthy, which, like tree trunks, can reach 15 cm in diameter.

Interesting! Up to 80 buds can bloom on a peduncle at the same time - a gigantic bouquet!

In the garden culture, a very diverse variety of cardiocrinum is grown, which differ in height, flowering time, shades of petals (Chinese, Yunnan and others). A tall stem grows from the bulb, ending in a peduncle, and closer to the ground it bears large heart-shaped green leaves. Each flower is strongly elongated, consists of 6 petals up to 18 cm long.

Amaryllis

This flower is grown in gardens in southern countries, and in Russia it has found popularity in the potting culture. Perennial bulbous plant native to South Africa. Amaryllis (Latin Amaryllis) from its large pear-shaped bulb (up to 12 cm in diameter) expels a thick peduncle (up to 70 cm), ending in several buds, and in the lower part there are only a few narrow succulent straight leaves of a dark green color.

Sometimes the bulbs give 3 stems, at the end of each of which 4-12 buds can be located. The diameter of a flower of 6 petals bent outward is usually about 10 cm, but there are also larger varieties. All kinds of colors: white, red, purple, pink, etc., but there is no orange. Flowering occurs only once a year.

Hippeastrum

Beginners often confuse it with amaryllis, with which hippeastrum belongs to the same family. The genus includes about 90 species, differing in size and color. The bulb grows up to 10 cm across. Linear leaves up to 70 cm long are green and purple in color.

Interesting! The plant is popularly called "home lily".

Peduncle 35-80 cm long, hollow inside, bears an umbellate inflorescence of 2-6 bisexual flowers up to 25 cm in diameter each. The buds grow on their own long stalks. The color of the petals is even more varied than that of amaryllis, it is bicolored and spotted. Full regrowth and flowering of each peduncle in indoor conditions takes an average of 18-20 months.

White flowers that look like lilies

It is believed that white flowers are a universal gift for any holiday. In gardens, they are assigned the sunniest areas in order to get a high-quality cut. There are many crops that bloom with white flowers, very much like little lilies.

Eucharis

The tropical bulbous flower eucharis (Latin Eucharis), originally from South America in the Amazon basin, has successfully taken root in indoor floriculture. The most widespread are 4 of its species, between which breeders have obtained many different hybrids.

Four types of eucharises and their description:

  • Large-flowered. Peduncles up to 80 cm high bear an umbrella inflorescence of 3-8 buds. When blooming in December, May, August, white flowers up to 12 cm in diameter with a greenish "skirt" in the center (like a daffodil) exude a pleasant persistent aroma. The leaf is juicy green, wide at the base and pointed at the end.
  • White. Its leaves are narrowed at the base and at the ends. The peduncle has a reddish brown tint. Umbrella inflorescence consists of 10 buds. The flowers are white up to 7 cm in diameter. Blooms in October and March.
  • Sander. On a peduncle up to 50 cm in height, 2-10 buds grow. Corollas are white up to 10 cm in diameter. This variety is closest to the classic lily in its flowers. It blooms twice - in February and September.
  • Amazonian. Differs in oval green leaves. On peduncles up to 70 cm in height, no more than 6 buds are located. Snow-white corollas up to 12 cm in diameter are practically a copy of a daffodil.

Alstomeria white

The variety of colors of alstroemeria (lat.Alstroemeria) is quite large, but white is considered the most elegant. Perennial rhizome grass has flexible erect stems and whole linear leaves. At the ends of the stems, umbrella-shaped inflorescences bloom, consisting of a different number of buds, but each corolla has 6 petals.

Common types and flowers of white alstroemeria:

  • Virginia. Medium-sized variety - up to 70 cm tall. It usually opens in the second half of June. The flower consists of 6 petals arranged in 2 rows. The outer ones are snow-white with greenish pointed tips. The inner row of petals consists of one snow-white and two with pink dots and a yellow spot.
  • Whistler. His flower consists of 4 white petals and two with yellow and red specks. Corolla diameter - up to 6.5 cm. Pointed leaves - dark green. On the peduncle - up to 20 buds, blooming gradually.

Zephyranthes

The representative of the amaryllid family - zephyranthes (lat.Zephyranthes) is a very popular indoor flower, native to the subtropics of South America. Translated, his name means - "Zephyr flower", and in his homeland the plant is called a rain lily, as it blooms with the beginning of the rainy season. Numerous narrow green leaves up to 40 cm tall grow from the bulb. On peduncles up to 30-40 cm high, crocus-shaped 6-petal flowers up to 8 cm in diameter of various colors are formed.

To fans of indoor floriculture, the flower is known under the names "upstart" and "indoor daffodil". They love him for the fact that flowering lasts from spring all summer. Each bud after blooming lasts an average of 1-3 days.

Common types:

  • Atamas - white-flowered, its corollas reach only 4 cm in diameter.
  • Snow-white is a larger species, in which corollas reach 6 cm in diameter. Bloom lasts from July to October.
  • Other species have yellow or pink flowers.

The peculiarity of seedlings from seeds is that they bloom only for 2-4 years, therefore this variety is propagated mainly by daughter bulbs.

White Zephyranthes

Pankratius

The amazing bulbous subtropical plant pancratium (Latin Pancratium) belongs to the amaryllid family. Its flower has a persistent vanilla aroma, and the ground part and bulbs contain a lot of alkaloids. Buds of 1 or several pieces bloom at the ends of high (up to 60 cm) peduncles. Broad-linear dark green leaves fan out at the base.

Important! The generally unpretentious species is almost never grown in the open field, since it does not tolerate frost.

Pankratius is called "lily-star". The flower, which blooms in May-June, earned such a name for the shape of the corolla. The stamens grow in their lower part and form a special petal-like shape, similar to a calyx. The petals, pointed at the ends and tapering at the base, form an outer row. From afar it can be mistaken for a daylily, especially when the corollas have withered, but in full dissolution they look nothing like anything.

Pancratium maritimum

Choosing a flower for a garden or a windowsill that resembles a lily of almost any shade in its shape is not a difficult task. Almost all representatives belong to the bulbous or large family of Amarilis.
