Content:
Daffodils are one of the spring primroses that delight the eye after a long winter. Their wondrous aroma conquered the hearts of Antonia Tsenis and the Jewish queen Berenice. The beauty of the narcissist was sung in their poems by K. Balmont and E. Dickinson.
What does a hybrid daffodil look like?
Narcissus is a plant that belongs to the class of bulbous perennials of the amaryllis family. There are more than 9000 varieties, subdivided into 12 groups, each of which has subgroups. The plant's bulbs are composed of fleshy scales. The peduncle is leafless, covered with a membrane. Leaves are linear, bluish-green in color, extend from the root zone, can reach 25-75 cm in length.
Flowers are single or collected in a brush. Each flower has 6 perianth petals and a perianth that differs in color. Depending on the variety, the flowers have a different color of the perianth lobes, tubules and crowns. The plant blooms in April-May, hybrids until autumn.
Most of the species are native to the Mediterranean, some from China and Asia. They are ubiquitous in Europe. The dominant in the development of new varieties of narcissus is traditionally behind the UK, USA, New Zealand, and the Netherlands.
Group classification
Narcissists are divided into groups, each of which has its own characteristics:
- Tubular. The length of the flower tube often extends beyond the perianth petals. The flowers themselves reach 9 cm in diameter, have a bright funnel of different colors, with a wavy edge.
- Large-crowned. The wavy crowns of flowers are less than the length of the perianths, with an average diameter of 10-11 cm.
- Small-crowned. The name of the group speaks for itself: corrugated flower crowns are 3 times smaller than perianth petals. The average diameter of the flowers is 8-8.5 cm.
- Terry. Almost all flowers of this group reach 8-15 cm in diameter, are distinguished by the splendor of the petals, which have smaller inner lobes. They can be one and two-color.
- Truandrus. Each peduncle is equipped with 2-6 drooping flowers. The perianth petals are slightly bent in the opposite direction. Plant height does not exceed 25 cm.
- Cyclamenous. The group is distinguished by early flowering of plants. Each perianth petal is significantly bent back. The spread of the diameter of the flowers ranges from 6 to 9 cm.
- Zhongky. Peduncles of this group abound with inflorescences of 5-6 flowers with a diameter of 6-10 cm. Popular varieties of this group: Swintes and Golden Smile.
- Tatted. As in the previous group, dense, thick peduncles have 5-7 flowers, all of them are rather large in size, with cup-shaped funnels.
- Poetic. Peduncles are decorated with single flowers, usually with a milky-white tone of petals, with a shortened, flattened crown, framed by a border of red shades.
- Split-crown. The flowers differ in the shape of the crowns. They are, as it were, divided into separate segments and have a fringed edge.
There are other groups as well. For example, the Brandushka group includes dwarf hybrids, with tiny perianth petals and an open funnel-shaped crown. A prominent representative of this group is the Bulbokodium hybrid variety.

Narcissus breeding methods
Like most bulbous perennials, daffodils are flowers that reproduce in several ways: by seeds, bulbs, babies, and scales. To choose the appropriate method, you need to know their features.
Seminal
The collection of seeds is carried out from dead plants that have formed a seed capsule. Wait until it starts to give small cracks. Noticing signs of cracking, they are brought into the house and kept at home, laid out in an open place.
Soon the box opens, then you can collect seeds without waiting for complete drying and immediately sow in open ground. Seedlings will appear next spring, but they will bloom only for 3-4 years of life (hybrid varieties in 5-7 years).
Children
When a nest is dug for breeding, the children are collected separately, planted in a divider bed. They bloom for 2-3 years.
Bulbs
When digging an overgrown nest, the bulbs (together with the babies) are carefully separated from each other. They are checked for diseases, disinfected and seated in prepared holes. The next season, such plants are already blooming.
Scales
The name is slightly inconsistent with the breeding method. In fact, the onion is divided into 2-4 parts, so as not to affect the bottom. The cut sites are dried and placed in a depression in the ground, or in a pot filled with moist moss. After a certain time, numerous children are formed around each lobule. They are separated from the bulb and planted in open ground.
Care
Most species of daffodil are successfully grown in the open field of central Russia, with the exception of rare hybrids.
Priming
Planting is carried out in prepared soil, which has good moisture capacity and the ability to retain moisture. To do this, add a little clay, compost, ash and 1 tsp into a hole 15-20 cm wide. complex fertilizers, mix, add soil, water. They plant an onion, sprinkle it completely with earth, compact and water again. The optimal time for planting is August-September.
Watering
Plants in the southern regions need watering during the budding period, if there is no rain, and the spring is hot and dry. In the middle zone of Russia, it is not required, the land at this time is still saturated with moisture.
Top dressing
When planting bulbs in prepared soil for the first 1-2 years, top dressing is not recommended. The culture responds well to abundant mulching with humus for the winter, which is not harvested in spring. Adult plants are fed with ash in autumn, adding a small amount to the soil.
Pruning
This procedure is not practiced by daffodils. On the contrary, they try to preserve the green mass as long as possible, until it completely dries out in the natural environment. To obtain a bouquet material, cut off some peduncles at the soil level.
Bloom
All varieties bloom immediately after the snow cover disappears. The flowering period is short - 1.5-2 weeks. The region of growth and the cultivar are important.
Hybrid varieties have a longer flowering range - up to 2-3 weeks. Some species bloom in mid-summer and closer to autumn.
Possible growing problems
Narcissus does not bloom if the bulb is younger, under flowering age. It is important to select the correct bulbs for planting. A small number of peduncles indicates that the nest is thickened and requires division.
Infection with thrips or daffodil flies can cause buds to dry out. In this case, all peduncles are cut off, the plant is sprayed with insecticidal preparations.
Another problem can be diseases caused by soil fungi:
- fusarium,
- botrytosis,
- sclerocial rot.
They require careful treatment. The nest is dug out, washed, the bulbs are placed in a warm 1% formalin solution for 8 hours and transplanted to another place.
If the daffodils are too short, this may be due to varietal traits, or the wrong location.
The reason why small flowers form may be due to the degeneration of the daffodil. We'll have to check the nest for diseases, if necessary, change the planting material.
Currently, there is such a huge selection of daffodils that you involuntarily get lost. Calgary flowers look like peonies, they are so lush, and Sunny Side Up resemble exotic orchids. Of course, they look great in a vase on the table. But it is better to admire them in the garden, framed by greenery, because these primroses carry the scent of spring.
