Brief description of the flower

Codiaum (croton) variegatum is an evergreen and perennial plant. The name "codiaum" of Greek origin, translated into Russian means "head". "Variegatum" is translated from Latin as "motley, ornamented." All flower varieties are variegated.

This shrub belongs to the Euphorbia family. Many growers ask themselves the question: "Codiaum and Croton are different species or is it still the same?" The exact answer was not found. The description of both species is similar, the habitat is similar. Codiaums (crotons) are widespread in the tropical zone of Asia, South America and Australia, as well as on the islands of the Pacific Ocean.

For your information! There is also a third name for the flower - "Cloak of Joseph". The codiaum owes them to Joseph the Beautiful, the biblical hero, who had a bright cloak of dreams given by his father. The leaves of the bush are variegated with yellow, orange, peach, red, burgundy and black blotches, reminiscent of this garment.

In nature, codiaum grows both as a shrub and as a tree.

Important! A poisonous milky sap is released from the damaged leaves or stem of the plant. Ingestion causes profuse vomiting and diarrhea. If the juice gets on your skin, it can cause severe dermatitis. Croton is poisonous not only for people, but also for animals.

Croton bloom is associated with the stress experienced by the plant due to the heat and dry air.

Features of plant care

It is difficult to care for crotons, plants often die if the rules of keeping are violated.

Light mode

All varieties of codiaum love natural light.Easily tolerates direct sunlight if the day is not too hot. When the temperature is more than 30 ° C, it is better to remove the flower from the windowsill or shade with something. For permanent placement of the plant, windows facing west or east are suitable. In winter, can be rearranged to the southern windowsill.

In the autumn-winter period, you can use a special lamp for illumination.

Note!With a lack of light, the leaves will not look so bright, they will just turn green.

The soil

Croton needs light, breathable soil. The primer can be purchased at a flower shop or mixed by yourself. To create a soil suitable for croton, you will need leaf and sod land, as well as river sand. The ratio looks like this:

  • for planting a rooted cuttings or transshipment of a young plant, two parts of the sod land are taken. One part of sod land and sand is added there;
  • when transplanting an adult flower, the amount of leafy earth is increased to three parts.

Store soil must be rid of potential parasites. To do this, you can bake it in the oven or pour it over with a weak solution of potassium permanganate. Some experts recommend adding sheet soil to the purchased soil.

The acidity of the soil is of great importance for the active growth of the flower; the pH level should not exceed 6.5.

Important! Crotons are transplanted no more than once every 2 years.

Watering

Water for irrigation should be at room temperature, separated for at least a day. You need to water it regularly, preventing the earthen coma from drying out. After 15 minutes. after watering, the water that has got into the pan is poured out. Croton roots easily rot when the soil is swampy. Watering frequency is once every 4-5 days. Drying of the top layer of the soil serves as a signal for watering.

Flowering codiaum

Other rules of care:

  • Croton does not like dust on the leaves, so they should be regularly wiped with a damp cloth;
  • during the growing season, croton is fertilized with preparations for plants with decorative foliage;
  • codiaum needs daily moistening from a spray bottle;
  • the air temperature should not be below 17 ° С and above 26 ° С;
  • Croton blooms ugly, but spends a lot of energy on flowering. Therefore, flower brushes are removed when they appear;
  • for the codiaum to branch, it needs to pinch the top;
  • at home, reproduction is possible only by cuttings.

Important!It is worth avoiding placing a flower in a draft, it will quickly die.

Potential pests and diseases

Crotons are susceptible to the following diseases and pests:

  • root rot, which occurs when soil pH is below 6 units. Symptoms are root decay, leaf drying and falling off. Antifungal drugs are used to fight the disease;
  • sunburn. When brown spots appear on the leaves, the flower must be rearranged in the shade;
  • spider mite. Symptoms are the presence of a thin white web on the leaf plate. To combat this parasite, the trunk and leaves of the plant are washed with a weak solution of baby or laundry soap, and then treated with a drug against parasites (for example, Actellik 0.15%).

Caring for this flower is difficult. But if you follow all the rules, then for many years it will delight its owner with a bright crown.
